Citizenship in the Brazilian Journal of Pedagogical Studies (1944-1964)
Abstract
The notion of citizenship is inextricably associated with school education, albeit with changing meanings. This article aims to show how citizenship was denoted in the RBEP, in the period between 1944, the year of its foundation, to 1964, taking as its main references the works of Marshall and Westheimer and Kahne. Based on the production of data extracted from the magazine, three analytical focuses were formed: education producing citizenship; the citizen in the service of the nation; and the rights held by the citizen. Analyzes showed that the notion of citizenship present in the RBEP during this time should be promoted by the schools and is required for the development of the nation. Citizens must live harmoniously, without contention, and focused on collaborating to promote equality. This equality of conditions is a right, as well as education, political rights and individual rights.
